Center for Community Health Education Research and Service (CCHERS)

CCHERS is a partnership between Northeastern University’s Bouvé College of Health Sciences, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston Medical Center, the Boston Public Health Commission and 16 community health centers serving the diverse populations of Boston. CCHERS provides community-based education and service learning experiences for health professions students and conducts research into health issues that impact inner-city communities and urban populations. Research has focused on racial and ethnic disparities in health. CCHERS has received funding from many organizations, including three multi-million dollar grants from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Most recently, CCHERS received a five-year $6 million grant from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health as one of five national Centers for Reducing Disparities in Asthma. Founded in 1991.


Center for the Study of Sport in Society

Seeks to increase awareness of sport and its relation to society, develop programs that identify problems, offer solutions and promote the benefits of sport. Employing the power and influence of sport to create positive social change, Sport in Society promotes the values of diversity, conflict resolution, violence prevention, equal sports opportunities, community service, education and research, and disability advocacy and inclusion. Its Disability Sport Research Initiative engages in research, advocacy, and education activities related to athletes with a disability in sport. The Initiative works to create more access, equality, inclusion, respect, and legitimacy for athletes with a disability in the sporting environment. The Center has been funded by Massachusetts Department of Public Health, National Basketball Association, National Football League, and Corporation for National Service. It has a 36-person staff. Founded in 1984.
